Panel of the Week #1
Venom #34 (Marvel Comics)
-Cullen Bunn (Writer), Declan Shalvey (Artist), Lee Loughridge (Colors), Joe Caramagna (Letters)
Declan Shalvey’s mother would be so proud of this, it might even garner enough respect to get a coveted spot on the refrigerator as is any artist’s first dream, aspiring or professional. What stands out is the clever juxtaposition of the start white canvas with the flamboyant colors of the two characters in vicious battle, brought to life by not only Shalvey’s pencils and inks but Lee Louridge’s color pallet choices. I adore the spattering of blood ruining the pure white contrast, I’m a sucker for that. In a way, the contrast of foreground with background symbolizes Veom’s suit in a meta way: a start black outfit with white accents. Perhaps this was on purpose, perhaps not, either way, very nice work here.
